WOOD STOVE TROUBLESHOOTING
Installing a Wood Stove in a Fireplace

Q. I have a fireplace that I seldom use and am thinking of installing a wood stove in it. Can I close off the bottom of the flue with sheet metal and pipe the stove exhaust thru it?

A. There are many building codes regarding venting and clearances that need to be addressed. Things that burn are called combustibles. Things that won't burn are called noncombustibles. The floor beneath the stove must be noncombustible and extend a certain distance in each direction. The stove must be a certain distance, usually between 18 and 36 inches from walls and even wooden fireplace mantles. The flue of the chimney itself must be at least as large, are wise, as the stove vent, but cannot exceed 3 times the area of the stove vent.
